National HIV Testing Day — Thursday, June 27 — is an opportunity to spread the word about the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis, and the key role family physicians play in this effort.
According to the CDC, more than a million people in the United States have HIV, but many of them don’t know they carry the virus. About 40% of new infections come from people who are undiagnosed. Quick diagnosis and connection to treatment are crucial to reducing new HIV infections.
The AAFP partners with the CDC's Let's Stop HIV Together campaign to reduce HIV stigma and promote HIV testing, prevention, and treatment. You can find care resources from the AAFP on the Sexually Transmitted Infections page. Of particular interest are the American Family Physician collection on the topic of HIV/AIDS and an adult medicine self-study CME course that has a session on HIV screening and prevention.
