On January 30, the Biden Administration announced the Public Health Emergency (PHE) will end on Thursday, May 11. The decision to bring the PHE to a close is one the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has anticipated, and their course of action is consistent with their previous commitments to provide at least 60 days’ notice prior to the termination of the PHE. The AAFP acknowledged the Administration’s announcement on social media and emphasized its commitment to providing up-to-date information.
The AAFP Government Relations staff, in partnership with Communications and other AAFP departments, has been working diligently to understand the impact of the PHE wind down. Following are a few relevant updates:
- The AAFP sent a letter to President Biden with updated recommendations for ensuring continuous access to care when the PHE expires on Thursday, May 11. This letter has received media coverage, including in Politico and Medscape. The AAFP will continue to engage with the Administration to ensure that disruptions are limited, and certainty is prioritized to the highest degree.
- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a fact sheet outlining programs impacted by the wind down of the PHE.
- The AAFP worked with its policy advisory firm, Leavitt Partners, to develop an in-depth fact sheet of the programs that will be impacted by the ending of the PHE.
