On January 12, 2023, the LAFP Foundation in partnership with our sponsor, Baton Rouge General, hosted the inaugural Journal Club for the Department of Family Medicine, LSU Health Shreveport. The group met at Great Raft Brewing in Shreveport, LA. Articles for discussion included “Effects of Colonoscopy Screening on Risks of Colorectal Cancer and Related Death”, “Angiotensin–Neprilysin Inhibition versus Enalapril in Heart Failure PARADIGM-HF TRIAL, “Once-Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity” and “Empagliflozin in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease”.

David Janese, MD, Ricardo Villanueva Alvarez, MD, Lana Nassif, MD, and Chase Herrera, DO presented an overview of each article. The group then discussed the limitations of the research, the strengths of the research, the conclusions of the study and if the conclusions could be implemented in the patient population at LSU Health. Dr. Seidenberg, Department Chair, encouraged the group by stating, “As family physicians, we should be a critical appraiser of the literature.”
