Application Deadlines: March 1, 2025 and May 1, 2025

The AAFP Foundation Family Medicine Leads program provides 250 scholarships to assist students and residents with out-of-pocket expenses related to attending FUTURE, formerly National Conference, and other leadership development programs.

FUTURE, formerly National Conference, will take place July 31–August 2. 2025 in Kansas City, MO. Past attendees consistently rate it an invaluable opportunity because of the practical sessions, networking opportunities and chances to learn more about family medicine.

The AAFP Foundation offers two awards to help students and residents attend FUTURE and improve their leadership skills.

  • Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute is a yearlong leadership development program that starts immediately after FUTURE. This highly competitive program accepts 30 scholars who each receive a $1,000 award to help with travel and lodging expenses. The application deadline is March 1, 11:59 p.m. CT. 
  • Family Medicine Leads Scholarships provide 250 awards valued at $600 each. This financial assistance helps offset the cost of attending FUTURE, including registration, travel, lodging and meals. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. CT on May 1. Please note these changes to the application process:
    • There will be a cap of 700 scholarship applications accepted.
    • Before applying, you must obtain a signed verification letter from your institution to validate your graduation date/year in training and submit it with your application. Find details on the application website. 

Attendees are encouraged to apply for both opportunities, but a Family Medicine Leads Scholarship application will be considered only if the applicant is not selected for the Emerging Leader Institute.

The AAFP Foundation is interested in recruiting a diverse group of scholarship applicants, including students and residents from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine, rural communities and lower socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as those interested in caring for underserved populations.
