RememberCME thumbnail 2024 01Active members are required to report at least 150 approved CME credits every 3 calendar years. This is called the “re-election cycle”. It always ends on December 31. To be eligible for re-election, members must earn the credits within that 3-year period. Active members must report 150 credits for the 3-year time frame with 75 of the total credits being Prescribed credits.

Your CME transcript is the official documentation for reporting your hours of continuing medical education for re-election. The easiest way to update your CME transcript is by logging into your AAFP account and choose “Update CME Transcript”.

You may also report CME via:

  • The AAFP mobile app
  • By calling the AAFP Member Resource Center at 800.274.2237
  • By calling the LAFP office at 225.923.3313
  • Faxing the certificate of attendance to the AAFP @ 913.906.6075

Members can check re-election status online at www.aafp.com and report CME. Be sure to capture all the credit. Examples of credit other than educational sessions are:

  • Professional enrichment – This is limited to 25 credits during a three-year re-election cycle. Examples of professional enrichment include: other medical education experiences and activities, including independent examination preparation and informal self-study activities, such as reading a medical journal); these activities may or may not be documentable.

  • Teaching health professions – This is limited to 60 AAFP Prescibed credits during a three-year re-election cycle.

  • Advanced training – Examples of this include ACLS, ATLS, and BLS and is limited to 25 credits during a three-year re-election cycle.

  • ABFM or AOA Certification - Credit may be claimed for the certification or recertification examination through the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). This is limited to 25 credits during a three-year re-election cycle.

  • Scholarly Activities – Make sure to claim credit for hosting a CME lecture or publication and limited to 100 credits during a three-year re-election cycle.
