The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) highly values the contributions made by family medicine residents and medical students and recognizes the importance of training future leaders of medicine. It is one of the few specialty organizations to actively enlist resident and student members in leadership roles.
There are appointed leadership roles for students and residents in each of the following categories:
- AAFP commissions
- Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) Network leadership
- Representatives and liaisons to other organizations
- AAFP program and advisory boards.
In a national leadership position, you will have the opportunity to:
- Network with family physicians from across the country
- Attend national meetings funded by the AAFP, such as the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students
- Participate in the discussion of issues key to healthcare delivery and to family medicine
- Learn more about topics of special interest
- Cultivate organizational and communication skills
- Spend time with other resident and student leaders who share common interests and concerns.
The remaining 2023 application timelines are as follows:
- Thursday, September 7: Deadline for applications for AAFP commissions, FMIG Network leadership, and all other positions
- Sunday, October 1: Annals of Family Medicine and American Medical Association appointments announced
- Wednesday, November 1: AAFP commissions, FMIG Network leadership, and all other appointments announced.
