Louisiana Residency Programs

Residency Program DescriptionsRed Residency Map 01

As the birthplace of family medicine, Louisiana long has recognized the importance of strong family medicine residency programs that prepare excellent family physicians to meet the challenges and ever-changing needs of patients. If you are considering the fun, diverse, and rewarding career of family medicine, consider our state’s many fine residency programs.

Louisiana offers 10* family medicine residency programs with superior facilities and progressive clinical environments. While varied in format, each provides consistently, high quality training with dedicated faculty and resident staffs. Our residency programs are organized as affiliated networks around each of our medical schools and benefit by sharing diverse resources. There is wonderful collaboration and innovative faculty development within these networks. Louisiana is fortunate to have strong departments of family medicine representing our specialty in each medical school. Louisiana programs also benefit from the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians, which plays an important role in supporting residency education and encourages resident involvement in LAFP business through board and committee participation.

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) publishes a Directory of Family Medicine Residency Programs that lists each family medicine residency program in the United States accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The directory covers many topics in detail including faculty, staff, administration, accreditation, size, and salaries.

We hope the program summaries below, provided by each respective residency program, stimulate your curiosity and prompt you to come and explore our many outstanding programs.

And, as you begin the process of discovering the best residency for you and preparing for the match process, check out the resources on the AAFP website.

FMIG Connection

Family Medicine Interest Groups (FMIGs) are an excellent resource for students interested in exploring family medicine in an informal, but educational (and fun) setting. FMIGs provide programming and information that may not be offered in the medical school curriculum. Medical students can hear about the history of family medicine and its future and be exposed to a wide range of clinical skills and procedures important to family physicians.

The LAFP Foundation has created this section as a clearing house for all things FMIG related – including how to create an FMIG, how to lead one, and information on funding opportunities.

The American Academy of Family Physicians also has a valuable national FMIG Network to aid communication and the exchange of best practices between FMIG students and faculty leaders across the country. The network consists of campus-based faculty and student FMIG leaders, appointed regional coordinators, and one elected national coordinator. These coordinators serve as consultants to and resources for FMIGs.

Louisiana’s FMIGs are in region 1 of the National Network. Stay up-to-date on events happening in your region by joining the region 1 community
