25 holiday thumbnailDuring this holiday season, we’re reflecting on all that we are thankful for here at the LAFP Foundation (Foundation). Through monetary donations, in-kind gifts, or time spent precepting medical students, we are thankful for all of the Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians members who have made a difference this year.

We are sharing our 2025 successes and the many ways members can support Foundation programming as we head into 2026.

The Foundation works to cultivate student career choice in the specialty of family medicine and ensure a thriving family physician workforce for Louisiana. Foundation programs have benefited thousands of Louisiana medical students and residents through stipends, event scholarships, and programming to provide meaningful, family medicine-focused experiences. Without our donors, corporate partners, and friends, the Foundation’s mission to cultivate student career choice in the specialty of family medicine would not be possible.

Here’s how our 2025 impact breaks down:

  • 3 regional procedural workshops in Monroe, New Orleans and Shreveport. Over 150 medical students were introduced to procedures that family physicians perform daily in their practices as well as meeting faculty and residents from our residency programs.
  • 6 medical students received stipends to attend the LAFP Annual Assembly
  • 6 residents received stipends to attend the LAFP Annual Assembly
  • medical students served as a delegates to the National Congress of Student Members
  • 2 resident leaders served as delegates to the National Congress of Family Medicine Residents.

Your contributions are essential to sustaining and growing initiative like this. Will you join us and support the Foundation’s efforts to provide scholarships, hands-on learning opportunities, and guidance for students exploring careers in family medicine?

Year-End Giving Options

  1. Pay it Forward
Help keep the career-affirming programs going by joining the 25 Members for $25 Challenge and donating directly to the Foundation.
  2. Tax-Wise Alternative
Give from your IRA. Those 72 and older can implement a qualified charitable donation (QCD) from a traditional IRA or similar tax-deferred retirement plan. Whether you are itemizing deductions or taking the standard deduction, those 72 and older can limit their taxable income by directing up to $100,000 per year tax-free from their IRAs to charities through QCDs. Those who itemize deductions can use charitable deductions to help offset the tax liability when converting traditional tax-deferred retirement plans to a Roth IRA. Please always consult your professional advisor regarding your specific tax circumstances.
  3. iGive
The Foundation is a registered charity with iGive – providing you with an easy way to support the Foundation during your holiday shopping. Sign up at iGive.com/lafpf and shop online at the 2000+ participating retail establishments, a percentage of your purchase(s) will be donated to the Foundation – and your shopping donations are tax deductible! Merchants associated with iGive are not remote, online “trunk stores,” but rather retailers such as 1-800 Contacts, BoxLunch, Cheryl’s, Dick’s Sporting, Goods Expedia, JCPenney,  Kohl’s, Land’ End, Macy’s, Orbitz, Sephora, Staples, QVC, Verizon Wireless, and many, many more.

On behalf of the Foundation, its trustees, and all of the medical students and residents who benefited from the Foundation’s support this year, we wish you, your family, and friends a happy and safe holiday season. Thank you for supporting the Foundation and the family medicine specialty!
