The LAFP is excited to announce that Shantasia Jackson, DO, Chief Resident, Baton Rouge General Family Medicine Residency Program, has been awarded the AAFP Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education. 

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education (AEGME) recognizes 12 outstanding second-year family medicine residents nationwide each year. The award honors residents who demonstrate excellence in leadership, community involvement, academic achievement, patient care, and commitment to the specialty of family medicine.

The award is selected from a highly competitive national pool of eligible second-year family medicine residents across the United States. Historical estimates have placed the eligible resident pool at approximately 3,500 or more residents nationwide, making this a highly competitive national recognition.

Selection criteria include demonstrated leadership in the residency program, a commitment to addressing community health needs, a commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care and building strong working relationships with fellow residents, faculty and staff. 

Dr. Jackson was recommended by Desi Valentine, MD, Program Director, for the award.  Dr. Jackson is currently serving as Chief Resident for the Baton Rouge General FMRP.  Prior to being named Chief Resident, she mentored junior colleagues in her second year in didactics as well as in clinical rotations.  She is a very active volunteer with the Baton Rouge General community health events providing screenings and community education.  In addition to those efforts, she also works at the school-based health center in Baton Rouge.  She works with students to promote healthy eating and lifestyle choices.
