david mas headshot webWe are excited to introduce our August Member of the Month, David Mas, MD. Dr. Mas is a 2026 graduate of the LSU Lafayette Family Medicine Residency Program with deep roots to Acadiana. He was originally born in Cuba but grew up in Lafayette with his mom and 2 brothers.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and graduated from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, where he completed both his Medical Doctor (MD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees. After initially completing a year of general surgery residency with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas, he transitioned to family medicine and is currently completing his residency with LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, based in Lafayette. He will be working as a hospitalist and emergency medicine physician upon graduation.

Dr. Mas talks about how he chose to become a family physician.  “My path to family medicine wasn’t a straight line, rather it was a little bit of random luck. I love surgery and being in the OR but over time I realized that I wanted a different lifestyle. I always enjoyed speaking with my patients and forming relationships with them as much as the surgical work. A conversation with a close friend of mine who was currently finishing her family medicine residency opened my eyes to the breadth and flexibility that family medicine allowed. I decided to apply mid residency to family medicine and have not looked back.”

Upon graduation, Dr. Mas will be working in emergency medicine locally in Lafayette.  He does plan on working as a  Hospitalist in the future. Dr. Mas stated, “I wanted to stay in Lafayette due to the large Latino community Lafayette has. This would allow me to be a resource in the community for Spanish speaking patients who do not always get the opportunity to truly relay their concerns to their doctor whether in an outpatient setting or hospital setting.”

Outside of medicine, Dr. Mas loves doing Spartan Races and has thus far completed a 5K and 10K Spartan Race a year apart. This November he will be tackling a 5K and 10K Spartan Race back-to-back- a day after each other.   He is also preparing for a half marathon Spartan Race in December.

Join us in congratulating Dr. David Mas as our August  Member of the Month.
