The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) recently announced the release of the second edition of the Family Medicine Factbook, an interactive, publicly accessible resource that provides a clear, data-driven picture of family physicians and the essential role they play in the U.S. health care system.

Sports Medicine Longitudinal Assessment

ABFM is excited to offer the Sports Medicine Certification Longitudinal Assessment (SPMED-LA). This new alternative to the one-day exam will be available to physicians seeking recertification in Sports Medicine beginning in 2027.

Beginning in 2027, if a physician currently holds a Sports Medicine CAQ, they will complete registration for the 5-Year Cycle in the fall of the year prior to the 10th year of certification. Completion of the registration process automatically enrolls them in SPMED-LA* and initiates the continuous 5-Year Cycle process for maintaining certification. Participation in SPMED-LA begins in January of your exam due year.

2027 Exam Applications

Exam applications for the 2027 exam offerings are targeted to open on October 16, 2026. This will include the Sports Medicine longitudinal assessment enrollment for those due for recertification beginning in 2027.
