fmig making connections no and shrevThe 2026 – 2027 academic year has gotten off to a great start!  LAFP staff held planning meetings with our 5 in-state FMIGs to put together programming for the new year.  All FMIGs are committed to promoting Family Medicine as a specialty, as well as hosting meetings that promote camaraderie and enhance their clinical studies.

We began with the joint student resident social in New Orleans led by the FMIG at UQ Ochsner.  Next up, was a pickleball tournament for the family medicine students at LSU Health in Shreveport.  Faculty, residents and students enjoyed an evening of fun, food and competition.  Over 40 students attended the event held at the Lash Family YMCA in Shreveport. Thank you to our sponsor, Ochsner, for providing Torchy’s Tacos!

This week the FMIG as LSU Health New Orleans held their first meeting of the semester.  It was an introductory meeting to promote FMIG/LAFP membership and provide the students with an overview of the specialty of Family Medicine.  Dr. Rick Streiffer hosted an interactive presentation, “Why Primary Care and Family Medicine Matter”.  The students also met Dr. Emilio Russo, Department Chair and faculty advisors, Dr. Pam Wiseman and Dr. Sagie Hening.
