Recent actions have led to a pause in new visas and renewals for international medical graduates (IMGs), creating immediate disruptions across the healthcare system. These delays are preventing physicians from starting residencies, continuing care for their patients, and filling critical workforce gaps.
IMGs are an essential part of the physician workforce. Without timely visa processing, patients across the country, especially in rural and underserved communities, risk losing access to care.
Congress must act to ensure the Departments of State and Homeland Security restore timely visa processing and prevent further disruptions to patient care.
On April 8, the American Academy of Family Physicians sent a letter to the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security expressing urgent concern regarding barriers preventing IMGs from entering the United States or remaining lawfully in the country to continue their training practice. The letter also requests National Interest Exceptions and Expedited processing for physicians and medical trainees.
