Meet our November Member of the Month – Michael Crick

crick headshot 2Mr. Crick is a third-year medical student at Tulane School of Medicine and currently completing a sports medicine research fellowship at Andrews Sports Medicine in Alabama. He has been very active in the FMIG at Tulane as well as serving as delegate to the LAFP General Assembly, Board of Directors and FUTURE Conference.

Mr. Crick is from Baton Rouge. He attended St. Thomas More Catholic School through 8th grade before attending Catholic High School. He continued the family tradition of becoming an LSU Tiger for college before leaving Baton Rouge and moving down river to New Orleans for medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Mr. Crick talks about his inspiration to pursue medicine as “I would not be where I am today without a plethora of individuals. Most notably, as a high schooler, I specifically said, “I don’t want to be a doctor, they just give people shots all day.” This was told to my most influential mentor Dr. Stephen Antrobus. I had no interest in medicine at this point and had met Dr. Steve and my dad at Smash Burger for lunch. Dr. Steve insisted I shadow him in his office where he introduced me to medicine. While Dr. Steve is a MOHS surgeon, I was most struck by the relationships he had with his patients. They had such trust in him; it was like he was their friend who happened to take care of them. He showed me what being a physician actually meant and encouraged me to pursue my desire of helping others reach their potential through medicine.

We asked Mr. Crick how he chose to become a family physician. He stated, “I had actually never met a family medicine doctor before starting medical school. I had done my research on all the medical specialties and had to read and watch videos on what family vs internal medicine was. I was inspired to do primary care by my amazing pediatrician, Dr. Elizabeth Seiter. I was a kinesiology major in undergrad where I realized I wanted to do sports medicine and health-related fitness public health work. Family medicine was the perfect combination of taking care of the whole person in an outpatient setting with the ability to do sports medicine. Since starting medical school, I have been reassured I made the right choice with family medicine by interacting with so many wonderful individuals at Tulane, the LAFP, and the national family medicine scene. Yes, my desire is to help others reach their potential through medicine.”

Mr. Crick has served in multiple leadership roles with the LAFP. Prior to that he was very active in the FMIG at Tulane School of Medicine. We asked him why it is important for me to be a member of AAFP and LAFP. He stated, “The LAFP offers so many opportunities for medical students, residents, as well as physicians. As someone born, raised, and educated all within Louisiana it is important to me to join my medical specialty’s local chapter to get involved. This organization is how I learn more about family medicine, what the practice looks like in my state, and connects me with others locally and nationally. The LAFP is a bridge that allows for safe and secure connection into the larger world of family practice through the AAFP.”

He continued to describe his experience as a member of the Academy as, “As part of the academy, I have had the opportunity to attend Grand Rounds, Louisiana General Assemblies, and the national AAFP Future conference. I was able to represent Louisiana on a national stage as the Louisiana delegate and passed my resolution to support MSK/Sports medicine training in family medicine clerkships. Attending the Future conference also helped me to meet many great people and programs from around the country. The LAFP has also supported my efforts with putting on family medicine events at Tulane Medical school and hosts many workshops for students like me to attend.”

We asked him about his future goals, residency, and eventually practice goals. He stated, “My future goals are to finish my sports medicine research fellowship here at Andrews Sports Medicine, graduate Tulane Medicine with my MD & MPH, and enter a family medicine residency. My fiancé and I will be couples matching in 2027 and are not sure where we will end up yet! I would like to do a Sports Medicine Fellowship after residency to become board-certified and practice as both a non-operative sports medicine physician as well as a primary care physician. I think being team doctor for an organization/university would be ideal! I would also like to pursue health-related fitness research and integrate physical activity and nutrition more into the doctor’s office. Through my MPH training, I would love to do community programing and/or policy work to improve the built environment to encourage physical activity and eliminate food deserts. My large ultimate goal is to increase physical activity and healthy eating in our communities, and my personal specific goal is to be a family doctor that helps individuals reach their full potential.”

Please help us congratulate student member, Michael Crick, as November Member of the Month!
