The Louisiana Academy of Family Physicians is excited to recognize Dr. Logan Atkins as our November Member of the Month. A native of Crowville, Louisiana, Dr. Atkins has dedicated his career to serving his community through family medicine, providing care to patients in a rural setting while helping train the next generation of family physicians.
Dr. Atkins graduated from Crowville High School before attending the University of Louisiana at Monroe, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 2006. He went on to attend LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport, earning his medical degree in 2012. He completed his family medicine residency in Alexandria, Louisiana, in 2015.
Although becoming a physician was not his original career plan, Dr. Atkins found his calling after meeting Dr. Tom Colvin in Winnsboro, who invited him to shadow him. That experience helped inspire Dr. Atkins to pursue medicine and ultimately return to the community he now serves. During residency, he also met his wife, who is a fellow physician practicing in their community.
Since completing residency, Dr. Atkins has practiced in Winnsboro, where he works at Colvin Clinic and serves on the hospitalist staff at Franklin Medical Center (FMC). His commitment to rural health extends beyond patient care. He helped develop a new rural family medicine residency track in Winnsboro and serves as its rural track director. The program welcomed its first class of residents to Franklin Medical Center this summer, marking an important step in expanding opportunities for family medicine training in rural Louisiana.
For Dr. Atkins, practicing in a rural community comes with both challenges and rewards. Limited resources and the unique needs of rural patients often require creativity, flexibility, and thoughtful problem-solving. While the work can be frustrating at times, he finds it immensely fulfilling and intellectually stimulating. Meeting patients’ needs in this setting requires physicians to draw on a broad range of knowledge and clinical skills.
Dr. Atkins believes that developing the ability to care for patients with a wide variety of conditions, including those with more complex and serious illnesses, helps prepare physicians to become outstanding primary care providers. His approach reflects the value of comprehensive family medicine and the importance of equipping physicians to meet the diverse needs of the communities they serve.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Atkins enjoys running and exercising, playing video games, and playing drums and guitar. Most importantly, he enjoys spending time with his son, who keeps him busy outside of work.
The LAFP is proud to recognize Dr. Logan Atkins for his dedication to family medicine, his commitment to rural health, and his work in developing educational opportunities for future family physicians. His contributions to both patient care and physician training exemplify the important role family physicians play in strengthening Louisiana communities.
